Each of the five communities contributes something different and unique to make this one of the best places to live, work, and play. Our five communities are Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Leucadia, New Encinitas, Old Encinitas and Olivenhain.
Cardiff-by-the-Sea was founded in 1911 by developer J. Frank Cullen and named for his wife’s native Cardiff, Wales. Later Victor Kremer, a musician added “by-the-Sea.” Many homes enjoy ocean views. The community takes pride in the small business district that contains a gourmet market, library, post office and a wide variety of shops and restaurants. Just a short walk away is Cardiff Reef, a world-famous surf spot. The San Elijo Lagoon forms the southern boundary of the community and the city.
Leucadia is located at the northern end of the city. It was first settled by English spiritualists who choose the Greek name meaning “isle of paradise” or “place of shelter”. It continues to be a place were the laid-back California beach town feeling still exists. Leucadia is proud of its funky reputation, as well as its antique and surf shops and thriving arts community.
New Encinitas was previously farms and flower fields. After the completion of I-5 and the more recent development of Encinitas Ranch it has become the primary residential and commercial district of the city. Roughly located along El Camino Real between Encinitas Blvd. and Leucadia Blvd. it is home to numerous shopping centers, restaurants and the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course.
Old Encinitas thrives along Historic Hwy 101 and extends east to the top of the rolling hills which provides many residents a panoramic view of the coastline. Early Encinitas saw two periods of growth. The earliest structures date back to the 1880’s, the 1883 schoolhouse still stands at Fourth and F Streets. Real growth came in the 1920’s with the construction of Lake Hodges Dam and its dependable source of water. After World War II the area again saw rapid growth. Today the old buildings in downtown house unique shops and restaurants. The city’s most popular beach Moonlight Beach -- is located at the foot of Encinitas Blvd/B Street just a few blocks west of Hwy 101
Olivenhain, originally named “Colony Olivenhain”, was settled in 1884 by German immigrants. They first attempted to establish olive orchards but this proved unsuccessful. The settlers adapted to other forms of farming, including raising cattle and sheep. The community strives to maintain its rural character and heritage. The picturesque Town Meeting Hall is still the center of the community’s activities.
Located along six miles of the Pacific Coastline, bordered by Batiquitos Lagoon to the north, San Elijo Lagoon to the south and with rolling hills to the east -- Encinitas is the perfect example of the saying “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
I am committed to protecting and enhancing the unique and special character of our five communities. I need your help and support to continue to make this a great place to live, work and play.
